Rochester, the defending Class A WPIAL Champions dominated the second half to beat the reigning Class AA champion Bishop Canevin 78-35 at Rochester High School on Saturday afternoon. The loss breaks BC’s section game winning streak at 49 games. Canevin was reassigned into Class A Section 1 after last season.
Rochester jumped out to a 10-0 to start the game. But Canevin hit four three-pointers in a 12-3 run and the Crusaders trailed by only four after one quarter. Lauren Kirsch started the run, followed by Savanah Abbott. Then Josie Bocchichio hit two in a row to close the run.
A three pointer by Aliyah Scott, who finished with six points, tied the game at 16. After a Rams basket, Ashley Lippold tied the game at 18. But Rochester used an 18-5 run to end the second quarter and take control of the game.
The Rams extended their lead in the third quarter. Their press created extra possessions and helped give them a 24 point lead after three quarters. Mackenzie Huet scored four points in the quarter. Lippold and Bochicchio each added a three-pointer. Both players finished with a team-high nine points. The fourth quarter was only a formality as the Rams improved to 4-0 in section play.
Bishop Canevin drops to 1-1 in section play, 2-1 overall. They continue section play this week with road games Monday at Union and Wednesday at Cornell before the Crusaders return home on Thursday night to face Rochester again.
NOTE — This was BC’s first section loss since February 4, 2016. Canevin lost at Seton-LaSalle 44-38 to finish section play that year at 10-2. It was their second straight section loss. The team did respond to beat Greensburg Central Catholic to win the WPIAL Class AA Championship that season.
