Bishop Canevin returned to section play tonight and defeated Sto-Rox 3-0 in a match that lasted only 43 minutes. The Crusaders had a season high 41 service aces and Sophomore Alysha Cutri set a single match record with 17 aces.
The aces came out early for BC in this matchup, with 3 of the first 4 serves being aces from Sani Jones. Then in the next rotation up 5-2 Alysha Cutri served 18 straight service points, on 15 aces to put the Crusaders up 23-2 before losing her serve. This is the second straight night BC has scored 18 points in a row. They closed out the second set against Central Valley behind 18 serves from Ana Luisa Galante. Cutri recorded 15 aces during this stretch. Then an ace from Ava Gaitens ended the first set 25 -4.
In the second set, it was two kills from Trinity Anselm that got BC off to a 4-0 lead. Then four straight aces from Bella DeMark to increase the lead to 11-2. Erin LaQuatra followed with 5 aces and Canevin was up 21-5. Gaitens ended the second set just like she ended the first set, with an ace. This time it was her second straight ace and the second set final was 25-8.
Another Jones ace, she finished with 5, started the third set and after three more aces from Mia Altman, the Crusaders were on their way, up 10-3. Three aces from Izzy Beichner extended the lead to 11, and the only drama left was whether Cutri would get one more chance to set the record.
Her chance arrived late in the third set. Her record tying 16th ace of the night, put the Crusaders up 20-8. Two points later, the record was hers. Ace #17 broke the record set by Alexa Malloy last year at Cornell and tied only two weeks ago by Maddie Maziarz on Senior Night against Cornell. The final score was 25-9.
With so many points won on the serve, other opportunities were less available. Four girls, Anselm, Julia Balobeck, Halle Bergman, and Libby Hitchings each had 3 kills on the night. Jones had 9 assists and Altman had 7. And LaQuatra and DeMark had similar numbers, Erin with 5 aces and 5 digs, and Bella with 4 aces and 4 digs.
Bishop Canevin is now 12-2 overall, 9-0 in the section and currently has an 11 match win streak going. They put those numbers on the line on Thursday at Northgate High School. The JV match starts at 6 pm, with the Varsity match scheduled at 7 pm.
