The Bishop Canevin Boys Volleyball team was three points away from defeat when they scored seven straight points to win the fifth set at Thomas Jefferson on Thursday night. The improbable finish gave the Crusaders a 3 sets to 2 victory over the Jaguars to even their section record at 3-3.

Bishop Canevin used some early blocks to take momentum in the first set. Blocks from Jack Staley and Carmen Worrall pushed BC to a fast start. Collin Milko called to serve due to lineup changes scored 4 points on his serve and had BC on the brink in the first set 24-22. TJ tied the set at 24, but two Jaguar hitting errors gave BC a 26-24 win.

TJ jumped to a 5-0 lead in the second set, but BC recoveerd and tied the set at 10 on five service points from Jack Staley. Two aces from Carson Gaitens put Canevin in front and the Crusaders survived another 26-24 set win.

TJ started fast again in the third set and never slowed down. They won the third set 25-12. The fourth set started evenly. Another Staley service run had BC up 9-6. They held the lead as late as 16-15 but TJ finished strong to win 25-20 and force a deciding fifth set.

BC got the fast start in the deciding set. A kill from Carson Gaitens had Canevin ahead early. The set went back and forth early and was tied 5 different times on the way to an 8-8 start. A Jaguar run of four points on their serve had TJ only three points away from the win. The BC block turned the match around at this point. Gaitens, Staley, and Worrall each had blocks. An overpass kill from Staley was also a big point. Jordan Ruffing served six straight points. Chris Andrews held his base and kept tips from turning into TJ points. Finally, on match point, after a long rally, a Jaguar attack sailed long and started a Crusader celebrations.

BC is now 3-3 in section play. They split the season series with TJ , who now drops to 4-3 in section play. The Crusaders are 3-7 overall and have won 3 of their last 4 matches. Their next match is at home on Tuesday night against section opponent Keystone Oaks. The varsity-only match will start at 6:30 PM.
