The Bishop Canevin Baseball Team started fast in their season opener on Tuesday afternoon, but Monessen rallied for 7 runs in the last two innings for a walkoff victory at Monessen, 7-6. It was also the section opener for the Crusaders.
BC got on the board in the first inning. Nevan Crossey doubled and Justin Gmys brought him home on a sacrifice fly to put the Crusaders on the board first. Canevin added two more in the second inning. Dom Varley singled home Mason Glover, who also reached on a single. Varley scored on a ground out by Aiden Didion.
The game was scoreless over the next two innings before Michael Vaughn led off the top of the 4th with a walk. Gyms doubled him home for his 2nd RBI of the game. Monessen scored three in the bottom of the sixth to narrow the BC lead to one run.
Crossey started a two-out rally in the top of the 7th with a triple. It was his 4th hit of the game. He scored on a Glover single. Gyms scored on an error after drawing a walk. That gave the Crusaders a 6-3 lead before Monessen rallied for the win in bottom half of the inning.
The two teams will play again Wednesday afternoon as the Crusaders host the second half of the home and home series.
