Crusaders News · State Playoff Preview: A BC Battle to Decide who Advances to the PIAA Quarterfinals at North Catholic

You’ll be seeing “BC’s” all over the court on Tuesday night at North Catholic High School.  That’s where a PIAA First Round Playoff match in the Class A State Championships will be played  tonight.  The Bishop Canevin Crusaders (20-2) will face the Bishop Carroll Huskies (16-5) in a match scheduled for a 7:30 pm start.  This will be the first ever matchup between the two schools in the State Playoffs.
Bishop Canevin makes their 8th straight appearance in the PIAA Class A playoffs.  They are WPIAL champions for the third year in a row after defeating Fort Cherry in four sets on Saturday afternoon.  This is the Crusaders’ 9th overall appearance in the state playoffs, their first state playoff berth came in 2010.  SInce the PIAA went to match play in 2012, Canevin has a 5-6 record in state tournament play.  Bishop Canevin won the Class A title in 2015, but has lost in the first round in each of the last three seasons.  Two of those losses coming to teams from District 6, including last year’s loss to eventual PIAA champion Northern Cambria in four sets.  Their last win over a D-6 team in the states was in the 2015 Quarterfinals, when the Crusaders swept Purchase Line to continue their march to the state final that year.  Canevin is 2-2 against D-6 in PIAA play.
Bishop Carroll is in the PIAA’s for the 5th straight year.  The Huskies are the District 6 runners-up after losing to Northern Cambria in the district final on Saturday in straight sets.  This is their 7th overall appearance in the Class A State playoffs, their first appearance was in 2012.  The Huskies have reached the semifinals three times, most recently last year, when once again they were beaten by Northern Cambria.  They have only faced 2 WPIAL teams in state playoff competition, and won both meetings.  Last year they swept WPIAL runners-up Carmichaels in the PIAA First Round Playoff only 3 days after Canevin swept the Mikes for the 2018 WPIAL title.
The winner of the match will face the winner of the Clarion Area-Saegertown match, which is also being played on Tuesday night.  That match will be played on Saturday and a time and location to be announced on Wednesday.
Tickets can be purchased on location at North Catholic High School before the match on Tuesday.  Ticket prices are $8 for adults and $4 for students.  Your ticket is also good for the first match of the doubleheader tomorrow night.  That match has the WPIAL champion Canon-McMillan Big Macs facing the District 6 champion State College Little Lions in a Class AAAA first round match that starts at 6 pm.  Ticket prices and policies are established by the PIAA.
