The Bishop Canevin Crusaders girls volleyball team will be playing in their 7th straight WPIAL championship on Saturday afternoon. They will face section rival, the Fort Cherry Rangers in the Class A final. Start time is scheduled for 12 noon.
Bishop Canevin is 19-2 on the season, they won Section 3-A with a 12-0 record. They are the #1 seed in the playoffs. They defeated Riverview in three sets in the first round, swept Brentwood in the quarterfinals and needed four sets to beat Geibel in the semifinals. They have now won 18 consecutive matches. Bishop Canevin has won the last 2 Class A titles and 4 of the last 6 since 2013.
Fort Cherry has a 16-4 record. They finished in second place in Section 3-A with a 10-2 record. The Rangers have not lost a set in these playoffs sweeping Avella, Vincentian and Shenango on their road to the final. This is their first appearance in the WPIAL finals.
These two teams dominated Section 3-A. That shows in the coaches’ selection for this year’s All-Section team as 9 of the 10 selections are from either Bishop Canevin, with 5 first team members or Fort Cherry which placed 4 girls on the team. Each team had 8 girls placed on the All-Section team in total, including second and third team selections.
This is the second straight season the two rivals have met in the playoffs. In last year’s semifinal match at Peters Township, Rangers jumped out to a two set lead, before Canevin rallied to win in 5 sets. Including the two matches this season, in which BC swept Fort Cherry, they have won 8 straight matches against the Rangers. Fort Cherry last beat the Crusaders at home in 2016, sweeping BC in 3 sets. BC won the return match in 5 sets that year to start this streak and share the 2016 section crown with the Rangers.
Tomorrow’s match is the first of the four championship matches in the various classes. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. This match will be played in the main gym at Fox Chapel. There will be another match going on in the auxiliary gym between Geibel and Shenango for the Class A consolation final to earn the final spot in the PIAA playoffs that begin on Tuesday. Ticket prices are established by the WPIAL.
Tomorrow’s match will also be streamed on video, live by the Trib Live High School Sports Network (www.tribhssn.triblive.com). Their broadcast is scheduled to start at 11:45 am.
