Girls Junior Varsity Volleyball, Girls Varsity Volleyball · WPIAL Semi-Final Preview

A berth in the WPIAL Class A Girls Volleyball is at stake tonight for Bishop Canevin as they face the Geibel Catholic Gators at OLSH High School.  Start time is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
Tonight’s winners will play in the WPIAL Class A Championship match at Fox Chapel High School Saturday at 12 noon.  The losers will also play at noon Saturday at Fox Chapel.  But they will play in the auxiliary gym in the consolation match to determine the final WPIAL representatives for the PIAA playoffs that begin next week.
BIshop Canevin has an 18-2 this season and won Section 3-A with a perfect 12-0 record.  They have won 17 straight matches.  A win tonight will put the Crusaders in the WPIAL finals for the 8th straight year, and nine of the last ten years.  Bishop Canevin has won 4 WPIAL Class Titles including the last 2 years.  They beat Riverview and Brentwood in straight sets to reach this round.
Geibel Catholic has a 15-1 overall record and were the Section 2-A Co-Champions with a 13-1 in the section.  This is their first appearance in the semifinals since 2008.  They won the Class A championship in 2005 and 2006.  Geibel beat Leechburg in 4 sets in the first round of this year’s playoffs and beat fellow section co-champ Carmichaels, also in 4 sets, to eliminate last year’s finalist.
This is the first meeting between the Crusaders and the Gators since the 2014 regular season.  BC won that match at home in three sets.  They have met twice in the playoffs.  In the 2008 first round, Geibel won in 4 sets at Bentworth.  The next year, in a first round rematch, Canevin won in 5 sets at Penn Hills.
Tonight’s match is the second match of a doubleheader.  The first match has Fort Cherry facing Shenango in the other Class A Semifinal.  That match is scheduled to start at 6 pm.  If that match runs long, the BC-Geibel will start 30 minutes after the conclusion of this match.
Both matches will also be carried over the internet on the TribLive High School Sports Network (www.hssn.triblive.com) on an audio stream.  The stream for the BC-Geibel match is scheduled to begin at 7:15 pm.
Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students.  Your ticket would be good for both matches, if you want to attend the first match before the Crusaders’ match begins.  Ticket prices are established by the WPIAL.
